The Case of the Founding Values

Some of the richest moments in life arrive disguised as routine.
A place returned to. A drink poured. The same faces meeting again at the edge of another week. Nothing grand announced… and yet, over time, trust gathers there. Thought deepens there. Things are said there that struggle to surface elsewhere.
Our place was a pub table by the canal on a Friday evening.
That evening was warm and still. Boats drifted lazily in the marina. Glasses clinked somewhere behind us.
He worked in the music industry, helping emerging artists grow audiences, build momentum, and navigate the business side of their craft. And on the surface, things were going well. Clients were coming in. Projects were moving. By most measures, he was doing exactly what he had set out to do.
And yet… something in him wasn’t settling.
“It’s strange,” he said. “I love the work. I feel lucky to be doing it. But something’s off.”
The requests kept coming. A quick campaign for a new release. A push to record labels. More visibility on social media. Something live by next week. Each one reasonable. Each one urgent. Each one, on its own, entirely defensible.
And yet, taken together, they led somewhere else entirely… motion without direction. Activity without transformation.
He paused. A recent example surfaced. A client wanting a quick advertising push: something simple, something fast. Budget allocated. Expectations clear. On paper, it was straightforward. It often is.
Two things became evident. First, it reduced the work to a transaction. Second, he already knew it would disappoint. Not because advertising was wrong… but because no single tactic can carry the weight of a bigger problem on its own. Without the wider strategy, the deeper shift, it was always likely to underperform.
“So what should I do?” he asked.
Comply - and deliver something you suspect will fall short. Or resist - and risk appearing difficult. Rarely the preferred position.
We let that sit for a moment.
Then, more gradually, he began tracing the path backwards… how it had started, why he began, the kind of impact he had hoped to have. Not just visibility, but sustainability. Not just attention, but ownership.
And then the real energy entered his voice.
He spoke about the moments that mattered most to him. Not when a campaign performed well… but when an artist changed.
“It’s when they get it,” he said eventually. “When they stop thinking like artists waiting to be discovered… and start thinking like entrepreneurs. Like people building a real business through their music.”
There it was.
Not marketing. Not promotion. Not content calendars or launch plans.
Transformation.
He did not come alive because he was selling services. He came alive because he was helping creative people take ownership of their future. Helping them move from hope to agency. From talent alone to enterprise.
And once that became visible, the contradiction was difficult to ignore.
The business he had built and the work he was increasingly being asked to do were no longer the same thing. He had not moved away from his values. But his work had drifted from them.
You can build a business around what people ask you to do.
Or you can build it around what you believe is worth doing.
We finished our drinks as the light began to fade. No grand solution had appeared. No five-step plan had been drawn on a napkin. But something quieter - and perhaps more valuable - had taken place.
Given enough space, and the simple gift of being heard, he had found the words for what mattered most to him.
Sometimes clarity does not arrive through advice, but finding language for the truth you already know.
